• All debt has to be included in the Debt Counselling application (house, car and all other debt)

• All debt where prior legal action has commenced has to be excluded from the Debt Review. This is where a judgement has already been obtained.

• If you married COP both spouses income has to be included in the joint application.

• If you married ANC or living together a joint view of income is required. You are free to do a joint application as well.

• Once you have applied for Debt Counselling your Credit Providers cannot commence with any legal action for a period of 60 business days. This is to allow time for the Debt Review process to be completed.

• The aim of Debt Counselling is to assist you to repay your debt in line with your ability to repay. If you have no money to repay debt, Debt Counselling is not an option.

• Debt Counselling is an excellent solution if you are over indebted and you need a plan to repay the debt.

• Debt Counselling does not provide you with a payment holiday. You must make payments every month from the first month you apply.

• If you fail to cooperate with the Debt Counsellor or if you do not pay fees or the repayments on time, the process will be cancelled and your Credit Providers will be able to commence with legal action.

• During the debt repayment period your name will be listed on the Credit Bureau as being under Debt Counselling. During this period you will be unable to take on new debt.

• Once the debt has been repaid the Debt Counsellor will issue a clearance certificate and instruct the credit bureau to expunge the Debt Counselling notation from your record. This means that all records that you were under Debt Counselling is completely removed within 5 working days.

• Once this process is completed you should be able to access responsible new debt if required.
